1,2 Hexanediol เป็นตัวทำละลาย ที่ใช้ทดแทน Ethoxydiglycol, Propylene Glycol และ Butylene Glycol สามารถช่วยเก็บกักน้ำได้ดี (water-binding, humectant) และช่วยต่อต้านเชื้อโรคได้ โดยสามารถทำหน้าที่เป็น preservative booster
กลไกการทำงานเป็น Preservative Booster เกิดจาก ลักษณะโมเลกุลของ 1,2-Hexanediol สามารถซึมผ่านเซลล์ของเชื้อโรคต่างๆได้ดี ทำให้สามารถนำพาสารกันเสียชนิดใดๆในสูตร ผ่านเข้าเซลล์ของเชื้อโรคและฆ่าเชื้อโรคได้ง่ายขึ้น นอกจากนี้ ยังมีฤทธิ์ฆ่าเชื้อโรคได้ในตัวเองด้วย
ข้อควรระวัง
แนะนำให้ใช้ 3% ร่วมกับสารกันเสียชนิดอื่นๆ โดย 1,2-Hexanediol สามารถช่วยนำพาส่วนผสมต่างๆเข้าสู่ผิวได้มากขึ้น ควรหลีกเลี่ยงการใช้ 1,2-Hexanediol ในสูตรที่ไม่ได้ต้องการให้ส่วนผสมต่างๆในสูตรถูกนำพาเข้าสู่ผิว ตัวอย่างเช่น สารกันแดดเคมี (Chemical Sunscreen หรือ Organic Sunscreen)

Aqua (Water) (น้ำหรืออควา) สามารถประกอบเป็นเครื่องสำอางได้ถึง 95% เป็นส่วนผสมที่สำคัญมาก ซึ่งต้องมีคุณภาพสูงมาก และบางครั้งกลายเป็นส่วนผสมหลัก
